It is always important to get a physical prior to starting your natural bodybuilding campaign. Since intensity is so important for your bodybuilding results, you must know, medically, that you can go all out without any fear. A general physical can find such things as high cholesterol, heart issues, and even such diseases as diabetes, and high blood pressure. Wouldn’t it be great to know any of this before starting your training program? In my opinion, this is the crucial starting point even before defining your goals. Your goals and program might need to be changed resulting from the data found in your medical evaluation.

I’m sure you have picked up a copy of Muscle and Fitness, Flex, or Muscular Development only to become impressed with such size and definition. You probably think if you were to train the same way you would get the same result. Not necessarily so. You are a natural bodybuilder, and don’t use steroids, they do. That means they can recover much faster between workouts, and are generally always in a anabolic state. Thus, they can get away with making many more bodybuilding mistakes than you, the natural bodybuilder can. Therefore, it is much more important for you to understand the physiology of bodybuilding, and to train much more intelligently. Don’t follow everything the pro bodybuilder does. Most are overtraining, and not maximizing their true genetic potential. The bottom line: don’t believe everything they say. Do your homework and structure your natural bodybuilding program on science and not fiction. For more information visit Natural Bodybuilding Smarts.

When performing an all out bodybuilding rep it is important to eliminate all momentum possible. Let the muscle do all the work to move the force. After all, your objective is to get the muscle to do all the work.

The only way to control the rep is to perform a slow, continuous tension gathering rep. I always recommend a minumum of two seconds positive, and 4 seconds negative motion. The longer you execute the rep, the greater tension you will place on your neuromuscular system. This translates into a higher intensity.

So the next time you are in the gym think slow, controlled exercise movement. Let the muscle do all the work!
